Spring Cleaning Fever

Got it! Just couldn't help it!

I thought I’d just avoid it this year. You know, all that ‘spring cleaning’ stuff. But then it just hit me! Yes, right out of the blue I was simply possessed by that urge to clean everything in sight and out of sight. I just couldn’t help it!
I started seeing dirt everywhere. In the silverware drawer. In the buffet hutch. In the bookcases. Oh, and the dust bunnies under the bed. I didn’t just see dirt. I felt dirt!
And once again, just like last year and the year before that, and back into the ancient lineage of my ancestors, familial training and DNA took over completely, almost as if I had no choice at all.
What is that urge that lies dormant in the dark and cold winter months and then suddenly, one day seemingly without any warning, motivates and energizes a behavior change with such force that it cannot be ignored?
Whatever this profound energy is, I’ve noticed that springtime is full of such mysteries, and although every season has its magic and metaphor, for whatever reason, I’ve noticed springtime with a more acute eye and appreciation this year.
I imagine a dormant seed of the desert variety, mostly dead, I assume. But then the spring rains come, and in a once seemingly barren landscape the hills are alive with color.
I imagine that you and I are a lot like that seed, parts of us dormant, needing the spring rains, and just waiting to burst forth with passion and purpose in a powerful way.
As I contemplate the cold and leafless landscape of a snowy winter, naked branches reaching silently to the cloud filled sky, I remember the potential waiting to be born in the spring.
I started to think of the greatness that is still dormant in you and in me. Oh, the gifts that are buried there, just waiting for the rains!
And so once again, I throw myself furiously and joyously into the energy of spring cleaning, feeling somehow a part of nature’s rhythms. It is with joy, yes joy, that I'm cleaning away anything in me that might be in the way of renewal, rebirth, and the resurrection of passion and purpose.
