The Simple Treasures of Mother's Day Memories
On a personal note

Mother. The word conjures up so many visceral connections and so much longing since my mother left this physical world for the mystery and beyond over five and a half years ago.
I miss her steadiness and her calm. I miss the delightful lyrical laughter with her sisters over the jokes they shared. And now, as I see the same story repeating with my sisters and me, I miss her all the more.
Whenever I think of Mom, I sense the pungent fragrance of springtime lilacs filling the air. I think of fresh baked bread. I think of the wild rose bushes in the yard where I spent my childhood.
In May especially, I’m prone to walking down memory lane to revisit the wren family who built their nests right outside our kitchen window for the entertainment of my seven siblings and me.
I can almost smell the fragrance of those golden brown loafs of warm bread right out of the oven, so tantalizing and begging to be smothered in butter and honey. I can still see her with her strong arms up to her elbows in the bread dough, and to our delight, rolling the dough into cinnamon buns and setting each one in the brown sugar, cinnamon and butter mixture to rise. What a treat that was to our senses of smell, sight and taste!
I want to take this moment in the month of May, her birthday month as well, to say, “Thank You, Mom, you were so much more to me than I ever understood.” Not until these ‘wisdom years’ of my own could I ever comprehend how you always held me and all my siblings close within your nurturing mother’s heart.
Your thoughts for us were for the good. Your prayers were always heard. We miss you, and hopefully, with each day that passes, we’re becoming more and more like you.
Perhaps we could celebrate Mother’s Day everyday. Unseen by our eyes, the mothering factor is at work every moment of our day. It is nourishing the seed deep in the moist earth and urging it to grow. It waits to awaken new life in the eggs our mother ducks are sitting on at the lakes in Estrella Mountain. Mother energy whispers in the breeze, warms us with the sun, gifts us with our fresh garden produce, and delights us with the moon and stars. Mother is just another name for the feminine aspect of God, the Life-giving Compassionate Womb giving birth to our world.
Blessings,
