My Granddaughter, Alexis, Travels Afar

My Granddaughter, Alexis, Travels to South America for her senior year in high school.

What a brave little bird she is! Barely 17 years ago, she was so small and new and now she bravely travels far, far away to discover exotic places of the world on her own terms.

One of the greatest fulfillments and joys of my life is seeing my children and grandchildren living their dreams in wonderful ways. Recently, my beautiful, intelligent, personable and adventurous granddaughter left her secure nest on the shores of Lake Minnetonka to fly far away as an exchange student to Bogota, Columbia.

Her last adventure took her to the rain forests of Columbia where she spent six days in the Amazon Jungle with her Rotary District of Cucuta and the District of Cali. Together there were at least 30 exchange students from all over the world. She writes of sunsets on the Amazon that are incredible, and completely indescribable. And about the green parrots, a toucan, and a macaw at the hotel. And about a capybara (the largest living rodent in the world) and watching her friend, Denmark, chase a monkey around the hotel trying to catch it.

We watch her grow and can’t help but think, “Oh the places you’ll go!”

I'm grateful beyond measure for the blessing of witnessing this next generation of brave, adventurous souls. Something tells me that they have what it takes; the courage, fortitude, heart, consciousness and soul for these critical and transformational times. Watching my granddaughter's wisdom, I would say that the future of our world is in very good hands.

She has stayed with two host families so far, attends an all-girl parochial school and mingles easily with her brothers and sisters in Columbia. Already a very social girl at heart, she is easy to get to know, but never superficial. Her writing betrays her deep thoughts about life, love and the world she lives in.
